A consortium of the AI Infrastructure Partnership (AIP), Abu Dhabi state-owned MGX, and BlackRock's Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) closed the acquisition of 100% of Aligned Data Centers from Macquarie Asset Management on 21 July 2026, at an enterprise value of approximately US$40 billion. The consortium committed an additional US$5 billion of growth capital at closing. The deal is AIP's first investment, and MGX's most significant compute-infrastructure position to date.
The instrument here is full ownership, not a stake, a co-location deal, or a financing line — the consortium now controls the asset outright, plus the balance sheet to expand it. That is a different act than the equity checks and platform investments that have characterized most sovereign-fund entries into AI infrastructure this year: this is a takeout of an existing operator, with MGX's sovereign capital sitting inside the ownership structure of the buyer rather than alongside a founder who retains control.
The chokepoint in the AI stack is rarely the model; it is the physical capacity — power, land, cooling, and the built shell — that determines how much compute actually comes online and on what timeline. Owning a data-center platform outright, rather than backing a compute-financing vehicle or an AI lab, is a bet on that physical layer directly. The additional US$5 billion in growth capital signals the consortium intends to expand Aligned's footprint rather than simply hold the existing asset.
What the deal does not resolve is the harder question underneath every large data-center transaction this year: whose power feeds the buildout, and on what timeline the grid can support it. A US$40 billion acquisition changes who owns the shell; it does not by itself create the firm capacity to fill it. That is the Energy & Transition Desk's chokepoint, not this one, and Aligned's expansion plans will eventually have to answer to it.
Ownership of the data center is not ownership of the compute. It is, increasingly, the precondition for it.
